Group Three, Day One

This abbreviated Group Three Day One fishing report is sent to your near midnight after the blessed event which, as seen above saw Houston’s Martin “Madman” O’Malley (seated next to his beautiful fishing partner bride Cindy) winning his first ever yellow hat for his 18” Clark Fork cutthroat (yes, it was a tough day of bright sunny sky 90 degree fishing for Dem Threes!) and Bob “Boo” Branstad sporting his Sweetgrass-awarded Blue Hat for catching the largest trout of the day on bamboo, a 17 ¼” Bitterroot beauty—touchingly, he fished the rod once owned by his now deceased dad to do so, btw—Bob is also shown crooning next to Dave “Sweetgrass” Delisi who also won a yellow hat for his 19” bow caught brown on the Bitterroot (he being in RCR’s exempt from official E-13 competition boat) and also shown amidst his wonderful après-dinner presentation the Dem Threes on the latest style in bamboo—gotta have one, you know, as Kjeld “Cal” Hestehave did by grabbing one of the last E-12 Sweetgrass rods! [How about that for a run-on sentence, gang…almost reminds me of Cal’s seven hour explanation and beginning boar report on just how Augmentation Scott missed his UAL flight on Sat!]

And then Scott “Crack” McAdams wowed the crew with a description of his primo gag gifts (one of which was a bicyclist rearview mirror so that our outfitter could keep tabs on me as I (always) fish the back of his boat and another being a sewing kit to help his guide “mend) told of fishing tandem with the SS Genser-Shuester on the River Runs Through It Blackfoot River—both boats talking of running  record time in kayak courses, eating lunch and catching between the two vessels 30 fish almost all in the 16” category (see what a difference a week makes, Tattoos?!?)…occupying most of their time in talking of mergansers, bald eagles, geese and a gaggle of rubber hatches (this being the front end of the Fourth of July Weekend and the annual outcropping of beer-drinking floater along the Blackfoot)…concluding all that it was a “spectacular day”.

Martin “Madman” O’Malley next told of this day proudly fishing with his veteran bride Cindy as our only boat on the Clark Fork—and a Yellow Hat winning one it was—with 12 + fish landed in lengths that diminished in both size and quantity as the day progressed—yes it was a bright hot bluebird day on the CF as well!  He other non-Bitterroot river boat was the SS Tyler/Trina Clausen which had the same Blackfoot experience that the boat above did…a “lot of hits”, 11 fish landed and the largest being Tyler’s whopping 18” whitefish (a non-candidate for any E-13 awards).

And then it ws on the Bitterroot that the rest of the fleet did ride, finding the fins to be elusive as the heat was a real factor on Day One.  Kers “Walter” Clausen and boat mate “Cal” told of “an excellent lunch with cloth napkins” and of ice cream for desert (thereby activating the BS bell), Bob “Boo” told of his solo day with veteran guide Chris Stroup (nearly in tears afterwards for [i] having to bob all day with Bob and [ii] decrying only netting “only three miserable fish”) in contrast to the much more experience fishermen of Chuck “Via Helena” Ballweg and partner Ron “Denver” Naff who boated 18 fish with twice that number rising to their dry flies which was in further reverse contrast to the Brubaker/Black vessel that is subject to a separate posting.  The big boat on that river was Boat No. 1 which featured Sweetgrass Rod’s Dave Delisi and RCR landing 25+ fish, including the largest of the day (even though they didn’t count toward the Yellow and Blue, size matters…at least to them that is!).

And that’s the way it was on Day One for Group Three…now onto bed for a few hours and then onto Day Two…who knows, maybe even Scott Gordon will show up…flash [Gordon]!!!

Best to all from the scene of it all,

Rock Creek Ron

George Bettas' Threepeat!

Just as he did for the WTF Ones and the Tattoos, MT. Fish, Wildlife & Parks Foundation ED presented to Dem Threes on the augmentation of grizzly bears in the northwestern portions of this great state.  And, get the, MIA Scott “Augmenter” Gordon (so named because he quipped that George was probably talking of breast implants for grizzly bears) is actually booked on a flight to arrive here in Extravaganzaland two (count ‘em) days late—an Extravaganza first (that is if it actually happens!).

Guess Whos Came to Dinner?!?

Longtime friend and great protector of all that is special here in Montana, Jeff Hagener, veteran Extravaganzer and current Director of Montana’s (huge!) Fish, Wildlife & Parks Department graced the Threes with his presence on their first night in Extravaganzaland, shown above with Group Threer past Montana Wildlife Federation president Tim “Four More Years” Aldrich and watching the presentation that evening of George Bettas.  Thanks, Jeff, for making the trek fro/to Helena to be with us—we were both blessed and honored by your presence…viva la Extravaganza!!

p.s.  Check you’re my fishing licenses all, as it is Jeff’s name as the issuer thereof!

Desertious!!

Rookie Error!

Newly MT named rookie Jim “Happy Hooker” Brubaker’s work product, a size 12 stone fly imitation, rests safely on the upper left cheek of his fishing partner Bill “Super Trout Piss” Black mid-morning on their first day of fly fishing on the Bitterroot, er Bitterfork.  Tally for the day:  STP netted two fish, HH landed STP only!

Egad, the fish are talking about this duo tonite in fear of both Day Two and Day Three of Dem Threes!!

p.s. Thank goodness that (a) the hook was barbless [leaving only a dit-dit-dah Morse code tattoo] and (b) STP was wearing his polarized wrap around sunglasses!

FW: Extravaganzers in the News: Announcing Bill Dodd's Bid for Assembly

A nice note form Napa Assembly candidate Bill “Bull” Dodd:

Thanks Ron, miss being with you this year!
Bill

Four Forlorn & Floundered Threes!

Meet would-be Threers (a) Ladd “Da Litigator” Bedford, (b) Chuck “Delta” Ballweg, (c) Scott “Augmented” Gordon and (d) Kers “Walter” Clausen seen as they arrived here with Dem Threes and, appropriately, sat in four separate venues:  the Blackfoot house bar, the Rock Creek Mercantile, one of the upstairs dining areas and the boat report arena.

It seems that the first two ended up on a 3+ hour delayed Delta flight that made them miss all of their inbound connections (with every seat on every Missoula later-bound flight being spoken for for the ensuing four days with (a) headed back home to watch tv for the weekend and (b) at my behest leaning on Delta to make amends (which they did by flying “Delta” into SLC on a delayed basis and then onto Helena from where he will drive the 2 hour sprint from there getting in sometime before the witching hour)—hence, (a) will involuntarily miss the Extravaganza show and (b) won’t.

And then there is the sorry, indeed, sailing pair of (c) and (d), the former of  whom made it to the airport for his UAL nonstop flight but, rather than curbside checking his bag, elected to wait in the interminable line inside the terminal whereupon, when presenting his bag to the agent 30 minutes later, was told that because of security protocols he was too late to check his bag into the flight while the latter is still cooling his heels in SEA-TAC due to mixing up “a.m.” and “p.m.” when making his reservations resulting in a 12 hour cooling off period in Seattle while waiting for his errantly booked Missoula bound flight.  At least (d) has a seat, expecting his sailing buddies to make the 1 1/2 hr driving trip to pick him up at 7:00 p.m. tonite.

Seldom before in the history of the Extravaganza have so many interfering events occurred on one simple, easy-peasy travel day…right, you “Forlorn & Floundered Fours” shown above?!?

\

To add to the confusion (and confusion was indeed rampant with two other delayed flights en route) one of the financial advisors four has already landed his MT name without so much as leaving the airport—it seems that one of the early arriving Threes (such few as there were to choose among) had ordered a Makers Mark and then proceeded to leave it on the bar, where upon RCR put it in a sippy cup and presented to last-arriving Three (for the moment, any way) to which Bill Black asked, “is this Trout Piss?!?”  Well, imagine his surprise to find his new MT name to be just that or, among friend, “STP_--Super Troup Piss!

And this is just beginning, gang!!!

Extravaganzers in the News: Announcing Bill Dodd's Bid for Assembly

Fellow Extravaganzers:

It is always special when one of us does something special.  As set forth below, long time friend, client, Napa County Supervisor, and Extravaganzer Bill Dodd (last year Bill “Bull” Dodd landed a 31 incher of his own name on the Blackfoot, er Blackfork) is spreading his wings a bit further and looking to make the same positive impact in Sacramento that he has been successful in doing over the last 12 years in Napa County.

Dear Friends,

You know me as your friend, your neighbor or your Napa County Supervisor.  Starting today, you will also know me as a Candidate for the California State Legislature running for the 4th District Assembly seat.

This campaign will be a major endeavor, with the primary election next June and the general election in November of 2014.  I will need lots of support and hope to be able to count on you to ensure our success.  There has not been an Assembly Member from Napa County in more than 30 years and I think it's time for the residents of Napa County to have one of their own represent them in Sacramento!

The press releases have hit the news media throughout the region and I have included a copy of the release below this message.  I have always appreciated the opportunity to serve the 4th District in Napa County and I pledge to continue the hard work serving the residents of the 4th District in the State Assembly.

Please call or email me if you would like to help out on the campaign trail - I hope to count on your support!

Sincerely,

Bill Dodd Signature

NAPA COUNTY SUPERVISOR & SMALL BUSINESSMAN BILL DODD RUNNING FOR STATE ASSEMBLY

NAPA, CA—Supervisor Bill Dodd today announced his candidacy for next year’s race in the 4th State Assembly District.  Dodd, a small businessman and Napa County Supervisor, cited job growth, education, supporting California’s aging population and the unique rural needs of the 4th District as his priorities if elected.

“I’m running to return California government’s focus to investing in its people, especially in our children’s future,” Dodd said.

“State government used to make smart investments, the kind that nurtured Silicon Valley’s creation,” he continued.  “We can do it again.  That means investing in schools, universities, transportation, and protecting our unique environment – the things that help produce good-paying California jobs."

Dodd, a Democrat from Napa County, also stressed his commitment to changing the political climate in the Legislature.

“For too long, the Legislature has put politics above progress,” said Dodd. “During my 13 years on the Board of Supervisors, we’ve tackled – and solved – major issues by bringing people together."

“Sacramento politics-as-usual imperils California’s future prosperity. I will bring a cooperative, problem-solving spirit to the State Capitol.”

Supervisor Dodd also serves on the Metropolitan Transportation Commission as well as the Napa County Flood Control and Water Conservation District.

Bill was born in Napa and has lived in the 4th Assembly District his entire life.  He attended local schools and California State University, Chico.  He went on to become a small business owner with Culligan Water franchises throughout the North Bay.  Bill and his wife, Mary, have five children and two grandchildren.

The 4th Assembly District includes all of Napa and Lake Counties, most of Yolo County, and portions of Solano, Sonoma and Colusa Counties.

A Cake to Tie-Dye For

Announcing the Lineup for Dem Threes!!

Soon to be winging and wheeling their way to Extravaganzaland will be the Mighty Threes who, unlike the WTF Ones and the Tattoos are soul searching for their permanent Montana banner…hmm, maybe that task will be accomplished during there stay here where, get this, temperatures are projected to soar into the high 90’s!!

Leading the pack is long in the fin eight time returnee Ladd “Da Litigator” Bedford who was originally scheduled to fish with his bride of  now 30 years “Missouri Kristine” but, alas, while celebrating their third decadal anniversary in Carmel three weeks ago Kristine took a tumble, broke her leg and, sadly, will staying home in the Bay Area be following the activity via Der Blog—we will miss you my dear and will play for the soon-to-be assembled multitude the E-08 Extravaganza movie in which you so beautifully starred.  Speaking of “long in the fin”, my Group Three horseshoe partner crack MechBank banker Scott “Crack” McAdams will also be coming back to his Extravaganza home, he of six prior Extravaganzas and having earned his moniker not from his banking prowess but, rather, from the failure to wear undershorts with the fishing pants I bestowed upon him years ago!

Also returning to the Threes, from Houston, are three-time Extravaganzer Martin “Madman” O’Malley, this time with his last year rookie Cynthia “Cindy” Day Stratton—it will be great to have you both back and your master suite at the bunkhouse is already made up and awaiting your day-early Friday arrival!!--, Richmond attorney Josh “B’Gosh” Genser for his third journey here who will be fishing with Vallejo cpa and business appraiser Rodger “Dr. Schuester” (likewise a three time returnee to these here parts!), now (finally!) past Montana Wildlife President Tim “Four More Years” Aldrich and his beautiful wife Carol,  and my brother Kers “Walter” Clausen who brings with him his sailing buddies veteran Kjeld “Cal” Hestehave  and rookies Bob “Motor Home” Branstad & Scott “Augmented” Gordon (the latter getting the E-13 award for the most attentive and responsive blog and email reader!).

I am blessed to have two of my three children back among Dem Threes (all there were here last year together with my three grandkids!), L.A. sound engineer Tyler “Lefty” Clausen and his good lookin’ sister Trina “Boots” Clausen, the latter of whom is soon to begin her first year of law school at Missoula’s University of Montana.

And that leaves a gaggle of four (count ‘em!) financial planner rookies, each of whom will be arriving here on Saturday not only in search of the boatload of fish that the Tattoos landed but, also, in search of their Montana nicknames.  Haling from Denver in that regard are Jim Brubaker and Ron Naff to be joined by Bay Area already-Blog-featured fisherman Chuck Ballweg and Orange County’s own Bill Black.  Good luck in advance, gentlemen (a word not oft used around here), as Montana’s glorious flora, fauna and fins anxiously await your arrivals in now less that 48 hours!!

Bring it on, Threes, for there’s a-gonna be a hot time in the old Extravaganzaland anon!!

Best to all in anticipation for the third act of it all,

Rock creek Ron

"The Juice" Speaks!

A nice note from Group Two’s Jerry “The Juice” Pantaleo—see y’all at the Montana Matters Napa Concert on Sat Nov 2nd—mark those calendars, all!

Ron , Kathy and Extravaganza Team ,

I just wanted to THANK YOU again for the wonderful Montana experience ! Not just the fishing but the entire 4 days was just a great time .

It is amazing how every detail was looked after and it showed .  Again thanks and hope to see you soon ......at least on November 2 !

Take care ,

Jerry Pantaleo

Thank you

A touching and totally appreciated note from Group One’s Mark “Whitey” Handron re his fishing partner, young “Son of Whitey” Liam:

Ron and Kathy:

Let me begin this email of thanks with a quick story.

The morning after Liam and I returned from Extravaganza 2013, I woke up reasonably early  - and headed down stairs for my morning brew (of coffee).   I heard the T.V. playing in the family room – which was odd as I’m usually the first one up and about.  I thought perhaps the kids left if on from the night prior.  As I made my way to the family room, playing on the T.V. was... a fishing show.  And curled up on the couch, glued to the screen, was “Son-of-Whitey” and his younger brother, Max;  AND, “Rods” laid, not-so-neatly, on the family room floor.  It was an absolutely delight to see!  Montana came home with Liam.

And, I have you both to thank.  Ron and Kathy, you are both such gracious and generous hosts.  Ron, from the moment we passed through the revolving doors, to the honorary yellow hat, to our good-bye’s Tuesday night,  you took great care to ensure Liam felt included and comfortable, at all times.  Not an easy task.

Kathy, not only did Liam love your cooking (going back for 2nd and 3rds each time), you welcomed him into your home each night like he was one of yours.  I can tell you – it made an impression on him.  For this, and so much more, I thank you both.

Hope to see you both in November.

Mark

Group Two Day Three

“Chaos”…”unbridled chaos” would be the apt description of the Tattoo’s Day Two boat report, so much so that, for the first time this year, Brian “Deerfish” McLeran was not to be heard much from…in fact, even he who, along with his fishing partner Jeff “Helena MD” Georgia “landed and released well over 160 fish during our three days this year!” was heard to say “I simply can’t believe it”  Yes, so diversely beautiful was the unfolding sight that ne’er strip tease acts with revealed cutthroat tattoos nor tales of lassoed fish (caught without a hook ‘ere being set) nor the awarding of not one but two Yellow Shirts would stand in the way of the over two hour presentation by the Tattoos for the benefit of the Tattoos because of the wacky and wonderfully successful acts of the Tattoos…indeed, they came, they fished and they conquered!!

Imagine the surprise of our long time Rock Creek neighbors John & Susan Taylor, they of Atlanta most of the year, who thought that they would “stop by for a quiet evening” who, in marked contrast, sat and sat and sat and laughed and laughed and laughed as the Twos, as only they can do, told tales of their last day on the great rivers of Western Montana.  And this story that they heard was a special one for, boat after boat, told of their great fishing success on the previously troubled lower Clark Fork River, giving rise to the proclamation that, post its Superfund cleanup and the removal of the Milltown Dam that the Clark Fork is back gang!!! [or, as some Tattoos would say, “The South Fork is back gang!!!]

Get this:  the Ralph “Red Baron” McLeran/”Dr Dave” Minor vessel, the SS Thornhill/ Eichorn, the SS Ciatti/Livengood and two of the Rodgers flotilla all fished the Lower Clark Fork with great success, talking of 18”-19” healthy fish with several having 30+ fish days, witness Greg “Living Good” Livengood reporting of “32 fish boated with an average length of 16-17”, the largest being a 19 ½ rainbow landed by veteran Extravaganzer and world trotting fisherman Joe “Compari” Ciatti and Brad “Blackfork” Miller telling of he and his partner Jerry “The Juice” Pantaleo’s CF 18 fish day .  Bueno, bueno, bueno!!

And that was not the only river that was fishing well under overcast and at times stormy skies.  The McLeran/Georgia yacht told of their 46 fish (but who is counting, gang) on the Bitterroot, the largest being a Ciatti-sized bow as well with the Gary “Big Cheese” Edwards/Lori “Fawnlady” Ware Root boat talking of a fish kissing whale of an 8th wedding anniversary for Mr. Cheese (he reporting that we should not tell wife Ruth that “Lori rocks” and that “he spent their anniversary with a hooker”)…but, then, along came the next two reports from the fabled Blackfoot (er, Blackfork) River and what reports they were.

Both of these boats being father-son combos, the first to weigh in was the Al “Good Earth” and Dakota Baylacq drifter who told of near altercations at the put-in site, of son Dakota literally lassoing a fish (landing it with a tight wrap not a hook set), and, the highlight, of dad Al hooking, landing and then successfully releasing a spectacular 22 ½” bull trout (see separate posting for pics and pride).  With this father-son duo fishing the same stretch as the Kevin “Father of the Bride” and “Wee Brandon” Sweeney boat each helping the other, the SS Sweeney first got the chance to film Al’s great catch only the later find “Wee Brandon” with an even bigger one on the line and ready for filming—a near-record setting 28 ½” Blackfork bull (likewise, see separate posting for sights of this wonderful specimen). Said the Wee one to the awed Twos, “this was the best fishing day of my life” [albeit it only his third day ever fly fishing].

As shown above, in addition to Day One Yellow Hatter Montana Troubadour Shane Clouse belatedly signing into the Twenty Inch Club and Fawnlady stripping to show her many new cutthroat tats, “Good Earth Al” signs onto the Twenty Inch Board with receipt of a Yellow Hat for his bully day, “Wee Brandon” does the same and then both the Wee one and “Shanna Banana” Rodgers show off their Group Two Yellow Shirts, the former for the bull and the latter for Girl Power!!

And I (a-la Deerfish McLeran) could go on, and on, and on about this Day Three report but suffice it to say it was getting dark by the time it was all over and dinner, much to the chagrin of our Hostess With The Mostess, was only placed on hold for over an hour as a result!

Indeed, the Tattoos came, they fished and they conquered and are now safely homeward bound with tales of the tails and tales firmly embedded in their mental hard drives.

Bueno, bueno, bueno---congrats, Tattoos, on once again an Extravaganza extravagantly done!!

Best to all from the scene of it all,

Rock Creek Ron

FW: E'13's 28 1/2" "Wee Bull"!!

Congrats from Group Oner Chris Barger:

 Wow that’s a beauty!

Chris Barger

E'13's 28 1/2" "Wee Bull"!!

Get a load of this, gang:   Now former rookie and current Yellow Hat and Shirt awardee “Wee Brandon” Sweeney shows his stuff and his prized E-13 leading 28 ½” Blackfoot River bull trout, first unnetting the beast only to then give us bpoth a lateral, head-on and side view of this monster fish that, get this, was landed on a pink size 12 San Juan worm (that you can see the SJW still hooked into the fish’s jaw).  This catch, indeed, is the leader of the pack, not only for Group Two but, so far, for all of Extravaganza 2013.

Bravo, bravo, bravo, “Wee One” (so named because months ago when father Kevin said he was going to bring his son along with him to E-13,  I errantly received message that Brandon was a “wee lad”—not so for this USD now graduated football stud who just emailed Headquarters with thanks “for one of the best trips of my life”).

FW: Five Valleys Land Trust Speaks to the Tattoos!

A nice note from our FVLT buddy Glenn Marangelo:

Thanks Ron.  I'm still rocking' my Rockin' C tattoo.  My wife had a good laugh this morning as I explained "I guess I had a few more beers than I thought!".

Best to Kathy.  See you soon.

Five Valleys Land Trust Speaks to the Tattoos!

Day Two saw Five Valleys Land Trust spokesmen Development Director Glenn Marangelo and Stewardship Director Ryan Chapin (shown above as tattooed!) make their third appearance in a row to the assembled Twos, this year telling of their December 21, 2012,  acquisition of the 200+ acre Sousa Ranch at the confluence of Rock Creek and the Clark Fork of the Columbia River, culminating nearly a decade of community involvement that resulted in this property forever being placed in the public trust.

Thanks for being with us Glenn & Ryan—let’s dance again next year!!
