This abbreviated Group Three Day One fishing report is sent to your near midnight after the blessed event which, as seen above saw Houston’s Martin “Madman” O’Malley (seated next to his beautiful fishing partner bride Cindy) winning his first ever yellow hat for his 18” Clark Fork cutthroat (yes, it was a tough day of bright sunny sky 90 degree fishing for Dem Threes!) and Bob “Boo” Branstad sporting his Sweetgrass-awarded Blue Hat for catching the largest trout of the day on bamboo, a 17 ¼” Bitterroot beauty—touchingly, he fished the rod once owned by his now deceased dad to do so, btw—Bob is also shown crooning next to Dave “Sweetgrass” Delisi who also won a yellow hat for his 19” bow caught brown on the Bitterroot (he being in RCR’s exempt from official E-13 competition boat) and also shown amidst his wonderful après-dinner presentation the Dem Threes on the latest style in bamboo—gotta have one, you know, as Kjeld “Cal” Hestehave did by grabbing one of the last E-12 Sweetgrass rods! [How about that for a run-on sentence, gang…almost reminds me of Cal’s seven hour explanation and beginning boar report on just how Augmentation Scott missed his UAL flight on Sat!]
And then Scott “Crack” McAdams wowed the crew with a description of his primo gag gifts (one of which was a bicyclist rearview mirror so that our outfitter could keep tabs on me as I (always) fish the back of his boat and another being a sewing kit to help his guide “mend) told of fishing tandem with the SS Genser-Shuester on the River Runs Through It Blackfoot River—both boats talking of running record time in kayak courses, eating lunch and catching between the two vessels 30 fish almost all in the 16” category (see what a difference a week makes, Tattoos?!?)…occupying most of their time in talking of mergansers, bald eagles, geese and a gaggle of rubber hatches (this being the front end of the Fourth of July Weekend and the annual outcropping of beer-drinking floater along the Blackfoot)…concluding all that it was a “spectacular day”.
Martin “Madman” O’Malley next told of this day proudly fishing with his veteran bride Cindy as our only boat on the Clark Fork—and a Yellow Hat winning one it was—with 12 + fish landed in lengths that diminished in both size and quantity as the day progressed—yes it was a bright hot bluebird day on the CF as well! He other non-Bitterroot river boat was the SS Tyler/Trina Clausen which had the same Blackfoot experience that the boat above did…a “lot of hits”, 11 fish landed and the largest being Tyler’s whopping 18” whitefish (a non-candidate for any E-13 awards).
And then it ws on the Bitterroot that the rest of the fleet did ride, finding the fins to be elusive as the heat was a real factor on Day One. Kers “Walter” Clausen and boat mate “Cal” told of “an excellent lunch with cloth napkins” and of ice cream for desert (thereby activating the BS bell), Bob “Boo” told of his solo day with veteran guide Chris Stroup (nearly in tears afterwards for [i] having to bob all day with Bob and [ii] decrying only netting “only three miserable fish”) in contrast to the much more experience fishermen of Chuck “Via Helena” Ballweg and partner Ron “Denver” Naff who boated 18 fish with twice that number rising to their dry flies which was in further reverse contrast to the Brubaker/Black vessel that is subject to a separate posting. The big boat on that river was Boat No. 1 which featured Sweetgrass Rod’s Dave Delisi and RCR landing 25+ fish, including the largest of the day (even though they didn’t count toward the Yellow and Blue, size matters…at least to them that is!).
And that’s the way it was on Day One for Group Three…now onto bed for a few hours and then onto Day Two…who knows, maybe even Scott Gordon will show up…flash [Gordon]!!!
Best to all from the scene of it all,
Rock Creek Ron
